HRSA Awards $12 Million Grant to Increase Diversity in Nursing Workforce

Washington, DC - The Health Resources and Services Administration ( HRSA) announced $12 million in grants to 36 academic institutions and three hospital organizations to further the education and training of the nation’s nurses and nursing educators, and increase diversity in the nursing workforce.

Medicinal Marijuana Effective for Neuropathic Pain in HIV

San Diego, California - In a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial to assess the impact of smoked medical cannabis, or marijuana, on the neuropathic pain associated with HIV, researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine found that reported pain relief was greater with cannabis than with a placebo.

CDC Releases New Data on Epilepsy from Multiple States

Atlanta, Georgia - A multi-state study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has found that about one out of 100 adults have active epilepsy, and more than one-third are not getting sufficient treatment. The study, which examined the prevalence of epilepsy or seizure disorder in 19 states, was published in today′s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

Men Age 75 and Older Should Not Be Screened for Prostate Cancer

Washington, DC - Men age 75 and older should not be screened for prostate cancer, and younger men should discuss the benefits and harms of the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test with their clinicians before being tested, according to a new recommendation from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force.

Washington, DC, - The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) announced that, together with sanofi-aventis, it is launching a new campaign called Sleeping Smart which will educate the millions of Americans who have sleep problems about the importance of a good night’s sleep, proper sleep habits, help them understand the consequences of insomnia, and the safe and appropriate use of prescription sleep medications.
