Targeted Drug Blocks Growth of Breast Cancer Cells Spread to Brain

Washington, DC - Using laboratory and mouse models of human breast cancer, researchers have found that a small molecule capable of targeting specific proteins on the surface of breast cancer cells can inhibit the growth of breast cancer cells that migrate to the brain. The small molecule used in the studies was the drug lapatinib (Tykerb®), which disrupts an important breast cancer metabolic process called the Her2/neu signaling pathway.

Deportation Linked to Higher Risk of HIV Infection in Male Injection Drug Users

San Diego, California - Male injection drug users deported from the United States to Tijuana have four-fold higher odds of HIV infection compared to those living in Tijuana who were not deported there, according to a study to be presented at the International AIDS Conference on August 5, 2008 in Mexico City.
