Laredo, Texas - Border Patrol agents assigned to the Laredo North station seized 44.6 pounds of crystal methamphetamine Monday.

Agents working at the checkpoint on Interstate Highway 35 conducted an immigration inspection on a Chevrolet sedan driven by a citizen of Mexico. A Border Patrol canine alerted agents toward the rear of the car, indicating the presence of hidden contraband or people.

Agents examined the vehicle and discovered trap doors in the rear wheel well. The trap doors led to false compartments in the rocker panels. Inside the compartments agents found 22 bundles wrapped in cellophane. The bundles contained crystal methamphetamine with a total weight of 44.6 pounds and an estimated street value of $1.4 million.

The driver, car, and drugs were turned over to Drug Enforcement Administration agents. U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
