Calexico, California - The Calexico, Brawley, El Centro, Holtville, Imperial Police Departments and Imperial County Probation will be conducting a Teen Turn Around checkpoint in accordance with the guidelines for checkpoint operations outlined in the Supreme Court decision Ingersoll vs. Palmer.

Motorists approaching the checkpoint will see signs advising them that a checkpoint is ahead. Motorists will be detained momentarily while a Calexico Police Officer explains the purpose of the checkpoint. The checkpoint is scheduled for Saturday, May 17, 2008 7:00pm - 2:00am Sunday, morning.

The detection and apprehension of minors crossing into Mexico and drunk drivers and/or drug-impaired drivers is a crucial component of the California’s Traffic Safety Program.

According to Calexico Police Department Officer, J. Jimenez, the checkpoint will be placed on the road and the drivers of every vehicle that enter the checkpoint will be checked. Should the volume of traffic become heavy, officers will check vehicles in accordance with a present standard (such as every 5th or 10th vehicle) to assure objectivity. Jimenez also stated that DUI checkpoints tend to reduce the number of drunk drivers, even though arrest totals do not rise dramatically.
