The National Institutes of Health will award 10 grants to support social epigenomics research in health disparities. This investigator-initiated research is being funded as part of the Social Epigenomics Research Focused on Minority Health and Health Disparities research program, which seeks to support research to better understand the drivers of health disparities. The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), part of the National Institutes of Health, will commit $26.2 million over five years, subject to available funds, for nine awards. An additional award under this initiative will be funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) €“ also part of NIH.

As scientists develop powerful neurotechnologies to monitor and regulate brain activity, ethical questions arise about how these new tools should be incorporated into medical research and clinical practice. To inform this discussion, the National Institutes of Health has awarded grants to five teams of experts who will study the neuroethical issues surrounding the use of deep brain stimulation in neuropsychiatric and movement disorders and appropriate consent for brain research.

The American Diabetes Association (Association) announced the three recipients of the American Diabetes Association New England Cardiovascular-Metabolic Fellowship Awards supported by a grant from Pfizer Inc. These two-year fellowships provide support of up to $150,000 for studies focused on improving our understanding of the pathophysiology, treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in people with diabetes. In addition to expanding our understanding of CVD; one of the most dangerous and deadly complications experienced by people with diabetes"”these awards seek to increase the number of future independent diabetes researchers exploring treatments and potential cures for diabetes.

In his lab at Boston University, Darren Roblyer, PhD, studies mice, invents new medical devices, and guides a clinical trial for women getting chemotherapy as their first treatment for breast cancer. All 3 of these projects are funded by his grant from the American Cancer Society. They all also have the same goal: To learn how well chemotherapy is working to destroy a tumor, as quickly as possible after the treatment is started.
